Archbishop's Tribute to the former Bishop of Ripon
Thursday 14 August 2008
The Archbishop of York, Dr. John Sentamu, today paid tribute to the former Bishop of Ripon, the Rt. Revd. David Young, who has died aged 76.
The Archbishop of York said: "I thank God for the life and ministry of a faithful priest and bishop and I send my sympathies to his family in their bereavement. David Young was renowned as a pastor, a worker for Christian unity and an educationalist. He shared that experience and commitment with the whole Church as Chair of the Church of England Board of Education and the National Society and as a member of the House of Lords. It was fitting that an Academy was named after him. What a joy it was to open it in his presence."
Bishop Young was the Bishop of Ripon for 22 years until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the House of Lords and the Church of England´s lead Bishop for Education.
His funeral will take place in Ripon Cathedral at 12 noon on Friday 22 August 2008.
